“The Colors of Hope”
LIN ELMO
MILFORD, CONNECTICUT

“Th e Swiss painter Paul Klee felt that
color was an indication of optimism.
It is for that reason that I was inspired
to work with similar bright colors and
angular shapes. I felt that the single
circle and tiny tree—typical of Klee—
symbolize hope and better days to
come.”

“Hundertwasser
Discovered”
LISA DUNCAN-PURCELL
LOS OSOS, CALIFORNIA

“I fi rst became aware of Friedensreich
Hundertwasser (1928-2000, an
Austrian-born artist and architect)
on a trip to Vienna and visit to
Hundertwasserhaus. Hundertwasser,
an opponent of ‘a straight line’
and standardization, expressed
these ideas in the design of this
apartment building. I can fi nd no
words to accurately describe the
playful color and design of this
building—it must be seen to be
appreciated. If Hundertwasser was a
quilter, I think he would be drawn to
improvisational and curved piecing.
His use of primary colors inspired
my quilt. Th is piece was a challenge
for me because it was so small and I
worked with primary colors, not my
typical choice. Th anks for the Reader
Challenges; I always learn something
new about my art and myself.”
