“The Apple Grove”
30" x 20"
Tasmania was once called
the apple isle due to the
large number of apples
grown here.
Free style stitched on
hand-dyed silk.

appreciate them even more. You see,
it is now scientifi cally proven trees
communicate, nurture, and support
each other through their root
systems. The forest is a much more
complex and amazing place than I
ever knew.
Yes, the light came on. Trees!
I love to draw and stitch them. In
fact, I was fi lling sketchbooks full
of them as a distraction from my
challenging circumstances. I could
not get my head around a number
like 10,000, so I went for half that.
The decision to create 5,000
trees has proven to be the most
wonderful, fulfi lling, and successful
project I have ever undertaken.
The confi nes and limitations of
choosing to work with a specifi c
theme is such a great way to stretch
yourself and be creative within the
limitations of a single subject. It
helps you fi nd your distinct style.
I have found the more I work, the
more ideas I have and the better the
outcomes are.
