Quilting Arts - USA (2021 - Spring)

(Antfer) #1
I am almost halfway through stitching the 5,000
trees. My goal is to have them fi nished in the next
two years. I thought I might get tired or bored making
them, but I still love creating every single one. I am
often referred to as “that Tree Lady” now, which I love.
As part of this project to stitch 5,000 trees,
I wanted to contribute to the protection and
improvement of the natural environment in Tasmania.
To do this I donate $2 for every tree I stitch and sell
to Landcare Tasmania for their various environmental
projects.
My creative journey has taught me to do what I
love with passion, dedication, and a certain level of
obsession—and maybe a little bit of crazy thrown
in, as you never know where it may lead. Maybe to
something quite extraordinary and fulfi lling.

“In the Tangled Grove” • 16" x 48½ "
I have featured a little sleeping wombat and a blue wren, one of
my favorite birds. The trees are Nothofagus gundi, Australia’s
only deciduous tree. It grows in the highland areas of Tasmania.
Freestyle stitched on hand-dyed silk and cotton.

“Blue Wrens and Blue Gums” (detail) • 32½ " x 32½ "
Blue wrens are one of my favorite little birds. They live happy
busy lives in my garden and provide much amusement. They
live in family groups with only the dominate males being the
bright blue color. The blue gum is Tasmania’s fl oral emblem and
is common around Tasmania, Australia.
Freestyle stitched on silk hand dyed with eucalyptus leaves.
