RESULTS FROM THE ‘MIXED GREENS’ READER CHALLENGE

b

oth gardeners and non-gardeners alike can appreciate the beauty of a spring garden or a fall
harvest of hand-picked gems destined for a delightful salad or stew. Plants nourish our bodies
and souls—we cannot live without them, in fact! We challenged readers to create a 5" x 7" quilt
featuring and celebrating their favorite fl owers or plants and invited them to get imaginative. These
quilts show myriad ways to look at and create homage to plants—aerial and abstract views; pieced
construction and appliquéd motifs; machine and hand sewing; with painted, plastic, and embroidered
embellishments. We are pleased to share this gallery of our readers’ work. We hope you enjoy the
following pages of original art.

“I love cabbages, and it seems like
I’m always putting them in my art! I
painted the cabbage on fabric, fused
it to a commercial fabric background,
and stitched.”
