Games for 100-Day
Projects
For those embarking on a 100-
Day Project, dice are great tools
for exploring design concepts and
combinations over the duration of
your project. Having a game plan at
the start eliminates the need to plan
each day’s participation and to simply
focus on responding to each day’s
assignment.

For my April–July 2020 100 Days
of Dice Designs project, I let my game
pieces make design decisions for
me. After assigning a parameter for
each numeral (fi gure 1, left) I chose
a color scheme by rolling a white die,
an element of art by rolling a red die,
and a principle of design by rolling a
green die. To make the resulting 7"
compositions, I fused fabric scraps
according to the roll of the dice.
A total of 216 combinations were

possible by rolling three dice with the
corresponding assignments!
In my July–October 2020 100
Days of Dice Doodles project , I
rolled a six-sided die to determine
a source of design inspiration for
free-motion thread painting/quilting
a 4" square. Each numeral on the
die corresponded to one of these
prompts: photography, music,
text, world/life events, memories,
and artist’s choice. These prompts
allowed me to explore each topic
broadly—‘music’ for example, could
be interpreted as song titles, lyrics, or
melody (while respecting copyright)
and ‘text’ could include everything
from a single letter to a quote. The
completed pieces were incorporated
into the quilt, “100 Days of Dice
Doodles.” (fi gure 2)

Shake It Up!
Dice are the perfect tool to
help you break out of a creative or
design rut. If you tend to gravitate
toward the same designs, rolling
the dice is an opportunity to
explore new design combinations
