THe WiTcHer 3:

Wild HunT
Before Game Of Thrones defined gritty fantasy worlds, we had Geralt Of
Rivia. CD Projekt Red’s RPG series has a similar vibe, blending mysticism,
bawdiness and lashings of swordplay and sorcery, and the third game
is a masterpiece. Here we follow reluctant hero Geralt on a quest to find
Ciri, his adoptive daughter. After all manner of adventures, Geralt tracks
her down, only to find that the whole world faces an existential threat.

If you’re seeking proof that indie developers are the primary source
of groundbreaking narrative in games, look no further than What
Remains Of Edith Finch. It’s astonishing – impossibly emotional,
unafraid to delve into horror and at times truly shocking. Edith is
the last of the cursed Finches, and she returns to her family home
to relive each family member’s past.

Do you appreciate a good Western story?
In that case, then, you will surely be well
acquainted with Rockstar’s Red Dead
Redemption II. In this prequel to 2010’s
excellent Red Dead Redemption, you play
as the jaded gunslinger Arthur Morgan, a
top-ranking member of the Van Der Linde
gang. In classic Western style, your gang of
noble outlaws is constantly on the run from
both rival posses and Pinkerton detectives,
and the memorably characterised bunch of
ne’er-do-wells cuts a swathe across large
areas of beautifully realised 1898 American
landscapes. As time wares on, Arthur notices
that the gang’s charismatic leader, Dutch, is
becoming increasingly unhinged and more
violent, and that slow-burning tension, along
with Arthur coming to terms with his own
mortality, forms the major backbone of the
narrative brilliance on offer here. It’s all classic
stuff which proves the art of narrative in
games hasn’t yet expired.
