Where to get
Capture NX-D
IT’S MADE FOR
NIKONS, AND IT’S
COMPLETELY FREE!
- As new Nikons are
introduced, Capture
NX-D should be the first
software to support
them. Another
advantage is that it
replicates Picture
Controls and other
settings. Capture NX-D
is available as a free

Enhance a scene

George Cairns demonstrates how to turn a daytime
photograph into a stunning sunset using Control Points
Capture NX-D is primarily
designed to be a photo-fixing app
that enables you to overcome
common problems with colour,
tone and composition. But
with a little tinkering, its digital
darkroom tools can be pushed
in a more creative direction.
A sunset (or sunrise) will
enhance any landscape, but it
takes effort (and a bit of luck with
weather conditions) to capture
one. In this walkthrough we’ll
demonstrate how to use Color
Control Points to change the
colours and tones of a standard
sky to create a sunset look.
Capture NX-D’s Control Points
enable you to sample the colour
and tone of a particular region in
your photo. You can then change
a wide range of properties in the
sampled area – including hue and
saturation – to create a new look.
We’ll show you how to sample a
blue sky and warm up its colour
temperature to create the orange
hue produced by a setting sun.
You can also use Color Control
Points to blow out the tones in
a circular patch of sky. This
creates an artificial sun that helps
sell the illusion of a sunset by
complementing the colours.
When shooting a real sunset
you’d meter the camera to
capture detail in the brighter sky.
This will cause the landscape’s
backlit shadows to be darker.
We’ll show you how to adjust the
scene’s contrast to help create a
more backlit effect.
