(Antfer) #1
fish for salmon. One year,
I went out with the boys and
got seasick—bad. But one
taste and it was all worth it.”
—Elizabeth Bramkamp,
Taste of Home field editor
Who Knew? In 1923, brothers
Thomas and Walter Belshaw
pioneered an automated doughnut
maker in Seattle. Krispy Kreme and
Dunkin’ Donuts still use Belshaw
equipment today.

West Virginia
Signature dish: Pepperoni rolls. The
state’s favorite snack was invented
for miners by an Italian immigrant.
Today, three giant pepperoni rolls
serve as mascots for the West
Virginia Black Bears, a minor-league
baseball team in Morgantown.
Who Knew? Come spring, West
Virginia residents head to the hills
in search of “molly moochers,” aka
morel mushrooms. The forest fungi
are considered a delicacy in the
Mountain State and beyond.

Wisconsin
Signature dish: cheese curds. “You
will find some form of fried cheese

curds in almost every
restaurant, bar, and
venue that serves
food in Wisconsin.
They’re usually
coated in a beer
batter—of course
made with Wisconsin
beer.” —James Schend,
Taste of Home deputy editor
Who Knew? Just because Wisconsin is
America’s Dairyland doesn’t mean all
the dairy has to come from cows. The
state is also our leading producer of
goat milk and, of course, goat cheese.

Wyoming
Signature dish: Bison or beef jerky.
Cowboys on the range have been
chewing it for more than 150 years.
Who Knew? Wyoming is also a
fisherman’s paradise, with more
than 70 species of fish, including the
state fish: the cutthroat trout.

What a Delicious Book!
The Edible Book Festival honors literary-inspired culinary creations, and this
year one entry really had the judges smacking their lips. It featured a cover
made of salami and cheese etched with a picture of Karl Marx, all sitting on a bed
of olives, bread, and assorted finger foods. Its name: The Communist Antipasto.
