Everything but the Girl singer Tracey Thorn
revisits her teenage years, and her life in suburbia
- “stif led and bored” and looking for a way out of
the claustrophobia of having nothing to do and
nowhere to go. Her old diaries were a vital
resource, full of days doing nothing, trips to local
shops where she bought nothing, and evenings full
of drunken parties and boy crushes. She’s utterly
brilliant and funny on teenage angst, and very
moving and tender on her relationship with her
parents, especially her mum, whose struggles she
only properly understood once she was an adult
with anxiety issues of her own. (Canongate)
