BACK FROM THE BRINK
Photographers and
filmmakers are being
sought to help draw
attention to threatened
wildlife in the UK. The
Back from the Brink
project aims to save
20 species from
extinction, including the
pasqueflower (pictured),
Cornish path moss, the
shrill carder bee and the
narrow-headed ant. Now
it is running a competition
to find images and films
that “inspire a nation to
care about and conserve
wildlife habitats”.

Scientists have developed a
universal cancer test that
takes just 10 minutes to
carry out. Cheap and
simple, it uses f luid that
changes colour to reveal
malignant cells. However, it
does not indicate where or
how serious the cancer is.
The Australian team
reports 90% accuracy when
the test is used to identify
cancer cells in blood or
biopsy tissue.

The Muslim Council of
Britain (MCB) has launched
a training scheme to get
more women on to the
management boards of
mosques. Twenty women
took part in the pilot, which
concluded in December and
is now being reviewed. Few
UK mosques have women
on their boards, a situation
that the MCB described as
“unacceptable”.

SMALL CHANGE

Created by marginalised
groups in deprived
neighbourhoods in the
Jamaican capital Kingston
to express peace, love and
social justice, reggae music
has been spread around the
world with help from the
likes of Bob Marley and
Peter Tosh. And now Unesco
has proved itself a fan of the
genre by listing it among
the world’s intangible
cultural heritage assets that
should be protected.
