There was an Old Man with a Beard
Edward Lear
There was an Old Man with a beard,
Who said, “It is just as I feared!—
Two Owls and a Hen, four Larks and a
Wren,
Have all built their nests in my
beard.”
About the author
Edward Lear was born in 1812, and from an early age
he was a dab hand at drawing and painting animals.
This led to work as an illustrator for natural history
books. Delighting in the absurd and the eccentric, he
began writing funny limericks and verse for friends’
children, which are collected in the much loved The
Complete Nonsense of Edward Lear (Faber).
