beautiful views. Another interesting area is the
Ljubljana Marshes, which are on the UNESCO World
Heritage List. The marshes are home to a diverse
number of butterf lies, birds and plants. A must-visit
here is Plečnik’s Church of St Michael in the Marsh.

Where’s your favourite outdoor space?
We live near Koseze Pond, an artificial lake that isn’t
suitable for swimming but is great for ice-skating in
winter. In the week, when we come home late from
work and school, we love to stretch our legs with a
walk to the lake. The kids enjoy the playground, while
we relax, watching the fishermen. You can join the
35km circular path around the city here. The Path of
Remembrance and Comradeship has replaced what
was a military barbed wire fence that surrounded the
city in the Second World War.

Tell us about the people who live there.
We’re very outdoorsy and love sports, so in our time off
you’ll see us cycling, roller blading, running, hiking and
so on. While we enjoy living in Ljubljana, most of us
escape at the weekend; both coast and mountains are
within easy reach – if not for the whole weekend, then
at least for a couple of hours, to conquer a nearby peak.

Where are your favourite places to go with friends?
On Sundays we get together with friends and hike from
Tivoli Park to a small hill called Rožnik. Countless
paths lead to it, and at the top there’s a nice restaurant
with a treat you can’t miss – f lancat, a type of fried
dough, like a doughnut but with no filling. When it’s
just us adults, our go-to place is Kino Šiška, the centre
for urban culture. It’s a great place for concerts but
usually we meet there just to chat over a beer.

Tell us about eating out in your city.
The food scene in Ljubljana has evolved and now you
can get pretty much whatever you like, from sushi to
traditional Slovenian food such as stews, our famous
Carniolan sausage, štruklji (boiled or baked dough with
different fillings, sweet and savoury) or potica, a type
of cake. Our favourite place for eating out in summer is
Open Kitchen. Every Friday from mid-March to
October the square in downtown Ljubljana turns into a
busy market with stalls of delicious food.

What’s your favourite way to get about the city?
The best way to get around is by bike. If you can’t bring
your own, you can rent one; there are hire companies
all over the city. Walking is also a nice way to see the
city. There’s a funicular that takes you up to the castle,
