FORAGING IN
YOUR GARDEN

Samphire can be grown at home
in a pot, or even a windowbox, and
you can find plants at this time of year
from specialist nurseries such as
Victoriana Nursery (victoriananursery.
co.uk) or buy seeds, which you should
sow next year in April or May.
It’s an annual plant but will self seed
when it’s happy, so you shouldn’t have
to keep buying seed. Grow in a pot of
well drained soil in full sun. It likes to
be watered with a saline solution of
one teaspoon sea salt (nottable salt)
to one pint of water, tomimicgrowing
with its feet in sea water. »

Trim samphire, as you
would a herb (though just
above ground level),
rather than pulling it
out at the roots
