TK pair participates in D2 singles tourney

The Thornapple Kellogg
varsity boys’ bowling team
had two guys in the Division
2 State Singles Finals at
Century Bowl in Waterford
Saturday: senior Michael
Willshire and sophomore
Wyatt Jacobson.
Jacobson placed 30th in
the six qualifying games and
Willshire, who has recently
signed his National Letter of
Intent to join the Davenport
University Men’s Bowling
program, was 36th.
Jacobson put together a
total score of 1,120 with high
games of 211, 202 and 200
among his six. Willshire had
a score of 1,098 and had high
games of 202, 196 and 187.
The top 16 players in both
the boys and girls qualifying
entered match-play brackets
to determine the state singles
champion. Grand Rapids
Christian Jerry LaRue was
the final match-play qualifier
in the boys’ competition with
a total score of 1,181.
Tecumseh freshman Owen
Williams was tops with a
total score of 1,470 that put
him 151 pins ahead of
Dearborn Divine Child
senior Noelle Jackson who
was the runner-up.
A pair of the Trojans’ OK
Gold Conference foes from
Kenowa Hills earned spots
among the top 16, senior
Lucas Buck who was fifth
and junior Zeke Dykstra who
was eighth.
Grand Rapids Northview
sophomore Kyle Pranger
was the ninth seed and he
bumped off the eight-seeded
Dykstra in the opening round
of match-play and then best-
ed Williams in the quarterfi-
nals on his way to the state
singles title. Pranger out-
scored Jackson Northwest
junior Damien Milliman
416-389 in the two games of
their finals match-up to
clinch the title.
The girls’ tournament saw
Flint Kearsley senior Allison
Robbins outscore Kadence
Bottrall, a sophomore from
Wayland, 1,287 to 1,232 to
finish at the top of the quali-
fying rounds, and St. Clair
Shores Lake Shore senior
Dani DeCruydt third at
1,230. Jackson Northwest
senior Karrah Wiggins was
the last of the 16 match-play
qualifiers with an overall
score of 1,116.
In the end, DeCruydt out-
scored Robbins 426-402 in
the championship final.
Robbins and the Kearsley
girls also captured the
Division 2 Team State
Championship Friday at
Century Lanes, outscoring
Mason 1,189-1,166 in the
championship match which
included two Baker games
and one regular game – with
Robbins actually putting up
just the fourth best score
from among her teammates
in the regular game to close
out the team tournament.
Kearsley got a 190 from
Megan Timm, a 188 from
Emilea Sturk and a 179 from
Allison Eible in that final.
Dearborn Divine Child
defeated Chelsea 1,358-
1,310 in the Division 2 boys’
final.
Jackson Northwest were
first in the boys’ qualifying
rounds which included eight
Baker games and two regular
games, but Chelsea knocked
off the Northwest boys in the
semifinals of the eight-team
match-play bracket.
Scots adjust to find winning shot in opener
Tryouts, one practice and
then a ballgame
That is how the spring
started for the Caledonia var-
sity girls’ soccer team last
week.
The Scots pulled out a 1-
win in that ballgame against
Grand Rapids Catholic
Central at Scotland Yard
Saturday. They followed that
up with a 3-0 loss to Rockford
in the OK Red Conference
opener Tuesday.
Kennedy Elles squeezed a
shot under the Catholic
Central goalkeeper midway
through the second half
Saturday afternoon for the
lone goal in the win over the
Cougars, getting an assist
from fellow senior Amber
Lewandowski on the play.
It took some tinkering to
find success against the
Cougars.
“We went into this game
knowing we needed to work
hard and be ready to make
adjustments while still work-
ing out player placement and
the best formation for our
team,” Caledonia head coach
Paul Kramer said. “The first
half we seemed a little bit
overwhelmed and C.C. had
more of the possession and
chances in the first half. At
halftime, we changed the
formation and tactics and
were able to turn the game
around in the second half.
With the change of forma-
tion, we garnered much more
of the possession with
Carmen Maas, Tori
Woodwyk and Megan
Toledano controlling the
midfield. This allowed for
our wingers and attackers to
push more forward and cre-
ate chances to score.”
It all led up to Elles’ goal,
and from there the Fighting
Scots’ defense did the rest.
The back three of Stella
Haan, Laney Petersen and
Sammie Burmeister shut
down any and all attacks
from Catholic Central
throughout the game, but
especially in the second peri-
od when the Cougars were
pushing for the equalizer
Kramer said.
The Scots’ goalkeeping
duo of Tara Robinson and
Davaney Balczak combined
for the shutout with both
making some critical saves
in the match.
On a windy, drizzly night
at Scotland Yard Tuesday the
Scots’ adjustments weren’t
quite enough against the
Rockford Rams.
“The first half we started
in the same formation we
finished with against
Catholic Central and found
out early on we needed to
make more adjustments.
With the wind at Rockford’s
back, they put a tremendous
amount of pressure and num-
bers in our half in the first
period,” Kramer said. “Our
backline held strong for a
majority of the half, but we
conceded two goals on set
pieces/scrambles in our own
18-yard box.
The Scots once again
altered their attack at the
half, and Kramer said his
girls responded by gaining
more possession, especially
in the middle of the field, and
creating more chances on the
attack.
“Unfortunately, we missed
a couple quality chances on
goal which would have
changed the whole complex-
ion of the game, and they
would end up getting a third
goal on another set piece/
scramble in our box,”
Kramer said.
The Caledonia coach was
pleased with the play of
Laney Petersen, Kennedy
Elles, Stella Haan and
Sammie Burmeister on the
backline.
“Also, Amber
Lewandowski [needs to be
commended] for her tireless
work up top creating chances
in the second half. There
were a lot of others who con-
tributed as well.”
Scots’ DeKubber doesn’t miss
match-play by much at D1 Finals
Caledonia senior Parker
DeKubber closed out his var-
sity bowling career with a
24th-place finish in qualify-
ing at the Division 1 Singles
State Finals Saturday.
DeKubber rolled a 222 in
the last of his six qualifying
games at Thunderbowl Lanes
in Allen Park. He also tallied
scores of 215, 144, 185, 158
and a high-game of 247.
That gave him an overall
pin-fall of 1,171 for the tour-
nament, just 39 pins behind
the last of the 16 match-play
qualifiers. Only the top five
of those 16 guys had a single
game score higher during the
qualifying than DeKubber’s
247.
Midland senior Izaac
Goergen earned the top seed
for the match-play with a
qualifying total of 1,361,
which had him ten pins ahead
of Northville junior Brandon
Leavitt who was the run-
ner-up. Goergen went on to
win his way through the
16-man bracket to claim the
state championship. He
rolled games of 233 and 230
in the championship match to
best Livonia Franklin junior
Ian Cain’s scores of 204 and
180.
Westland John Glenn
senior Anna Maxwell won
the girls’ singles title
Saturday as well.
The Hudsonville girls
from the OK Red Conference
captured the team state
championship in Division 1
at Thunderbowl last Friday
(March 26). The Eagles were
third in the qualifying com-
petition and then knocked off
top seeded Belleville 1,149-
1,122 in the finals of the
eight-team match-play
bracket where each round
consisted of two Baker
games and one regular team
game.
The 12-team qualifying
round consisted of eight
Baker games and two regular
games for each team.
The Division 1 boys’ team
title went to Salem.
