with European citizens (53%). Moreover, there is a relationship between the number of foreign
languages spoken and the extent to which, people are engaged in learning new languages. Thus,
people who are very active in learning new languages are also much more likely than those
who are inactive to be able to understand at least two foreign languages well enough to hold a
conversation in them. Moreover, Just over half of Europeans (54%) are able to hold a
conversation in at least one additional language, a quarter (25%) is able to speak at least two
additional languages and one in ten (10%) are familiar in at least three. While just over half of
all Europeans are able to speak at least one other language, there are no signs that
multilingualism is on the expansion.
