“Yellow”.
I think of yellow itself as a very joyous colour. But when it's used under
a racial context, I dislike it. I don't think I'llever be able to reclaim it.
“Asian”.
I think, to be Asian, your parent's ancestors haveto originate from Asia.
The the only thing all Asians share is that they'refrom the continent
Asia.
Of course, the closer you are geographically to otherAsians, the more
you will be able to relate to each other's culturesand experiences.
But Asian-ness is also something you claim. If youdon't think of
yourself as an Asian then you're just... not. Butyour descendants can
still identify as Asian.
Ethnicity|part1.
Han Chinese.
Ethnicity|part2.
I'm Chinese and there's no question about it.
My whole family is Chinese, my parents speak Madarinat home and we
practice Chinese traditions. Of course I am Chinese.
We also live in an area with many Chinese people. So I've never really
faced much racism or xenophobia directly and whenI did, I had a
community of people who could support me.
Because of this, I've never felt ashamed of my cultureand therefore, it's
not something I have to reclaim/be proud of either. It's simply a part of
me.
I'm extremely lucky to have a strong sense of identity.Unfortunately,
my experiences are not the case for many Asians.
