much, I do take it as a response to racism though because giving a
description to my ethnicity as a Filipino Asian issomewhat the same as
setting the facts straight as if to say that "Filipinos/Asiansaren't just
this or that."
Differ from Asian stereotype(s).
In regards to any stereotype, while these can be overlyexaggerated, I
think it also speaks a bit of truth because it'ssomething based on
observation so I wouldn't differ from some by thatmuch. On the other
hand, stereotypes allow baseless generalizations ofcultures among
ethnicities which affects how people see similar ethnicgroups. For
Asian stereotypes, I think some people take it forgranted that it
degrades Asian identity to the extent of racism. Withthat, there are
stereotypes I used to resonate with before but nowhide from since
they have a negative association.
A theoretical space without racism.
If a world without racism was a reality, I think thatpeople would be
more free in being vocal and expressive of their culturesand
ethnicities. People wouldn't have to live in constantfear of stepping
out their houses, speaking their minds, and just gettingthrough a day.
As to me, I feel like I'd have more space to breatheand just openly
indulge myself to my own culture withiut judgement.I'm not entirely
sure if the freedom that this 'no racism' world giveswould only spark
more controversy but these initial thoughts seem comforting.
Tell.
Personally, I actually enjoy mentioning that I'm aborn and raised
Southeast Asian (Filipino) because there's somethingfulfilling and right
about representing my ethnicity despite it's reputationand my own
flaws as an individual. There's so much I love learningand sharing
about my own culture that I just can't help but throwit out there. I do
however avoid political and economic discussions aboutmy country
since its standing isn't entirely at the best as ofthe moment. If you ask
me why then it's because of shame and insecurity thatmy background
is poorly developing. Other than that, I don't findmyself hiding from
facts about my ethnicity but if I ever did then itmust be a minor trivia
or a major problem.
Correct.
If there's anything to correct, then I would liketo address Asian
representation in Western media. I know that I myselfcan't do that
myself in concrete ways but there are so many instancesthat wrongly
portrays and stereotypes Asians that it becomes abit offensive to
someone like me who stands strongly with authenticity. It's immensely
frustrating to see that non-Asians would attempt to"correct" Asians in
regards to our cultures and traditions just becausethey saw our
