The vertebral column

Vertebral groups

The vertebrae are stacked on top of each other. They are grouped into five regions:


 7 vertebrae in the neck (called cervical vertebrae)
 12 vertebrae in the chest or thorax (called thoracic vertebrae)
 5 vertebrae in the lower back (called lumbar vertebrae)
 5 vertebrae in the hip region (called sacral vertebrae)
 3 to 4 vertebrae in the tail area (called coccygeal vertebrae or coccyx)
