N. B. Times until return to full duty will vary with severity of back pain and type of
work and are typical for ages 35 to 55 years. Times for younger workers are
approximately 20 to 30% shorter. In general you can get back to full duty within three
months provided you do your exercises and follow the preventive measures outlined in
this book.


N. B. No prolonged sitting, standing or walking without a five minute break every 30
minutes. For people doing heavy work, no prolonged sitting, standing or walking
without a ten-minute break every hour.


N. B. Driving car or light truck for 6 hours per day with a ten minute break every hour;
driving heavy vehicle or equipment for four hours per day with a ten minute break every
hour.

  1. Modification of NIOSH Lifting Guidelines 1981, 1993. Gradually increase
    unassisted lifting limits to 60 lbs (men) and 35 lbs (women) by 3 months even with
    continued symptoms. Limit twisting, bending and reaching. Always lift close to
    belly button.
