vertebrae are attached to muscles by tendons. Tendons attach muscle to bone.
Ligaments and tendons are fibrous connective tissues made up of densely packed, non-
elastic fibers. They provide support and stability for the spine and upper body.


Ligaments of the spine

There are two primary ligament systems in the spine:


 Those located on the inner side of the vertebrae and holds individual vertebrae
together
 Those located outside the spinal column holding many vertebrae together.

I am not going into the details of the names and locations of each ligament as it would
not be relevant to your understanding of back pain. Suffice it to say that if we
overstretch or strain any ligament, the supporting mechanism in the area fails resulting
in backache.
