Characteristics and Location Morphology

(A)

Squamous epithelial cells
These are flat, irregularly shaped cells. They
line the heart, blood and lymphatic vessels,
body cavities, and alveoli (air sacs) of lungs.
The outer layer of the skin is composed of
stratified and keratinized squamous epithelial
cells. The stratified squamous epithelial cells
on the outer skin layer protect the body
against microbial invasion. (B)

Characteristics and Location Morphology

(A)

Cuboidal epithelial cells^
These are the cube-shaped cells that line
the kidney tubules and cover the ovaries^
and secretory parts of certain glands.

mouth and throat and as the outer surface of our skin.
Stratified cuboidal epithelium is found lining our sweat
gland ducts and salivary gland ducts. Stratified colum-nar
epithelium is found as the lining of the ducts of the
mammary glands and in parts of the male urethra.
The pseudostratified arrangement appears to con-
sist of several layers due to nuclei variously positioned in
the cell, but, in actuality, all cells extend from the base-
ment membrane to the outer or free surface of the cells.
This arrangement is usually seen with columnar cells.
