EXERCISE:
Tissues
Materials needed: A compound microscope and
prepared- microscope slides
A.. Epithelial Tissue
- Examine a prepared slide of stratified squa-
mous epithelial tissue. Two types of slides
will be available. Slides made from the inter-
nal tissues of a human like the epiglottis will
be nonkeratinized, that is, the cells will have
nuclei. If the slide is of the skin, it will be ke-
ratinized, that is, the cells will not have nu-
clei. Refer to Figure 5-1 in the text as you do
your microscope examination of this tissue.^ - Examine a prepared slide of simple cuboi-dal
epithelium. This slide will be from a
duct of a gland. Refer to Figure 5-2 in the text
as you examine these cells shaped like cubes
attached to a basement membrane.^
- Examine a prepared slide of simple colum-nar
epithelium. The best slide of this type of
tissue comes from the intestine. Refer to
Figure 5-3 in the text as you examine these
tall rectangular cells.^ - Examine a prepared slide of pseudostrat-ified
cilated, columnar epithelium. No-tice how the
cilia on the free edge of the cells look like
flames or waves. Try to see that each cell will
extend from the base-ment membrane. Refer
to Figure 5-4A in the text.
