Before you buy or sit on one, just check that it has the above features. You can make
adjustments such as lumbar support in the form of a small pillow behind your back or a
footrest if your feet do not reach the floor but if the arms of the chair are too high or low
or your thighs slope downwards, then you are going to have a backache when you get up.


Sitting in cars


We also spend an awfully long time in our cars. Riding in or driving a car for long
periods of time increases stress. Move the car seat as far forward as possible to avoid
bending forward. The back of the seat should not be reclined more than 30 degrees. If
possible, the seat bottom should be tilted slightly upward in front. A traveler should stop
and walk around about every hour. Avoid lifting or carrying objects immediately after
the ride.


When getting out of a car, swing both legs out first and place your feet on the ground
before standing up. This avoids twisting the back which happens when you put one foot
out at a time.


Prevent osteoporosis

At some point during our lives we are all going to have some degree of osteoporosis –
brittle bones due to deficiency of calcium deposition in bone. Back pain is a feature of
osteoporosis. Because osteoporosis is difficult to reverse, prevention is the key to
treatment.


 Get a baseline bone density scan done if you are a male over 50 years or female
over 40 years of age. The scan may be repeated once in three years or earlier if
back pain occurs. Irrespective of whether you have osteoporosis or not on scan,
