surface of the globe.
Ishallhavenothing,orvirtuallynothing,tosayaboutthese
things,becauseasIindicatedintheprefacetothisedition,
thisbookisnotacompendiumofallthenastythingswedoto
animals. Instead I havechosen two central illustrations of
speciesism in practice. They are not isolated examples of
sadism, but practices that involve, in one case, tens of
millionsofanimals,andintheother,billionsofanimalsevery
year.Norcanwe pretendthatwehavenothingtodowith
these practices. One of them—experimentation on
animals—is promoted by the government we elect and is
largelypaidforoutofthetaxeswepay.Theother—rearing
animalsforfood—ispossibleonlybecausemostpeoplebuy
and eat the products of this practice. That is why I have
chosentodiscusstheseparticularformsofspeciesism.They
areatitsheart.Theycausemoresufferingtoagreaternumber
of
animals thananything elsethat humanbeings do. To stop
themwemustchangethepoliciesofourgovernment,andwe
mustchangeourownlives,totheextentofchangingourdiet.
Iftheseofficiallypromotedandalmostuniversallyaccepted
formsofspeciesismcanbeabolished,abolitionoftheother
speciesist practices cannot be far behind.
