On the 25 th anniversary of the ‘Polish Aid
Greußenheim’, Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan, candidate for
the office of Federal President, was awarded the Order
of St. Stanislas.
Long before the Iron Curtain fell and the Warsaw Pact
collapsed, the Polish Relief Action was founded in
Greußenheim in 1981. Food, clothing, and medicines
could thus be brought to Maków Podhalański by the
Greußenheim local pastor Eberhard Ritter and the
mayor Bruno Scheiner during aid trips for years. The
extensive commitment of the Rev. Eberhard Ritter and
Mayor Bruno Scheiner was already honored several
years ago with the Order of St. Stanislas.
Today, the aims of the Order have naturally changed,
although the obligations of the members have
remained like those of the founders. About 200
members from Poland, Germany, Austria, and
Liechtenstein can be found in the illustrious circle of
the Order of St. Stanislas. The 25 th anniversary of the
‘Polish Aid Greußenheim’ was therefore the occasion
for the investiture and knighthood of new St. Stanislas
Knights. The list of names that were selected to
receive the Order of Stanislas after the traditional joint
divine service was long with one top name: The
political scientist and former candidate for the office
of Federal President, Gesine Schwan, led the
honorable list of the six new members to be invested
into the Order. In addition, the head of the ARD studio
in New York, Annette Dittert, the Viennese manager
Dr. Eduard Precht, the Würzburg city councilor Kurt
Schubert, as well as Winfried Lange, who was born in
Johannesburg, and the honorary citizen of the Polish
city of Olsztynek/Hohenstein, Uwe Kuschel, received
the high award.
