The rough rock scrapes against my shoulder bladesand I worry the cuts will bleed, but
then she does something in particular that makes meforget. The night air is cool and her skin is
so warm against mine. I forget about security guards.I forget about fences. I forget about a lot of
things. The columns loom, ceremonial in their frontrow seats. Maybe there are figures in my
periphery or maybe it’s the moon making shadows inthe monument. Maybe there are whispers
around us, or maybe it’s just our mingled breath.I tell her I don’t think this is the first time this
has happened here, and she shushes me. “Be respectful,”she says.


We come down on sacred ground, hedged in by 5,000-year-oldmonoliths. It’s not that the
sex itself is mindblowing. It’s always good, withher. But bluestone isn’t our queen-sized bed or
even our living room carpet. It’s that I feel likeI’ve been cracked open, like there is something
pouring from my chest.
I ask her if it was everything she wanted it to be.
She turns her head and I look her in the eye forthe first time since my clothes came off. I
can never handle it while it’s happening.
She’s beaming. “You’ve no idea. I’ll have those scratchesfor days.”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to.”
“I love them.”
