of works of art into the rooftop garden. ‘The
combination of nature, art and architec-
ture is very special,’ she said. The jury also
highlighted the skilful use of varied materi-
als – including raw concrete, marble and
ceramic tiles – to achieve a visually stunning
yet warm and welcoming effect. ‘It says a lot
for this apartment,’ said Dominique Taffin of
Yanfeng Automotive Interiors, ‘that we can

SYDNEY – The jury particularly appreci-
ated Cleveland Rooftop’s sense of place.
The apartment’s strong connection with its
context bucks the trend, noted by Libby Sell-
ers, of ‘lots of residential projects becoming
like hotels, while ironically hotels become
more like homes’. According to SJB’s Adam
Haddow, the project originated from the
desire to create a unique and localized space
‘without relying on the usual Sydney iconog-
raphy – the harbour and the Opera House –
and instead using the landscape and climate,
which are very special’.
The apartment is a new rooftop
addition to an older, industrial structure. As
Sydney’s climate allows for year-round out-
door living, the home brings the outdoors
inside through garden spaces and skylights,
which also help to provide a sense of time
passing. Studiopepe cofounder and crea-
tive director Arianna Lelli Mami admired
the apartment’s ‘imaginative use of green-
ery and sensitivity to nature’, specifically
