PARIS – Before selecting the Set Design of
the Year, jury members decided that too many
projects use technology for technology’s sake.
What were they looking for instead? Simplic-
ity and poetry. Their attention eventually
landed on 35-year-old Swedish choreog-
rapher Alexander Ekman and the deluge of
green balls that forms part of Play, a perfor-
mance by the Paris Opera Ballet at Palais Gar-
nier. ‘The balls are used in such an interesting
