Addressing the issue of rising city density,
each cabin has a mere 15-m^2 footprint. The
project is a trial run of sorts, a way for MINI
Living to test out ideas for its permanent
co-living building, set to open this year in
Shanghai.
If we’re to believe that tomorrow’s
drivers would rather share than own, MINI
will need to reach a new audience, so it’s
smart that the brand is thinking outside the
(glove) box. And to do so by considering real

A CAR BRAND winning an interior-design
award? A little odd, no? Except that MINI
is no longer just a car brand. Milan Design
Week 2016 witnessed the first MINI Living
installation. While many ‘outsiders’ have
attempted to steal the show at the world’s
biggest design fair, it’s been by and large
with theatrics rather than food for thought.
MINI, on the other hand, explored how its
key principle – the creative use of space –
can inform the future of urban life.
MINI Living has grown and matured
since its birth. Not only has the company
reappeared at subsequent Milan Design
Weeks, but it’s moving towards permanent
projects, too. Last year saw a series of Urban
Cabins touch down in four major cities:
London, New York, Los Angeles and Beijing.
Esther Bahne is the name behind MINI Living,
A/D/O and other innovative MINI initiatives.
