To deliver the gathered information, the
armband had to be placed atop a transfer
pad... held in place by that most primitive of
aids, a pebble – a plastic white one, yes, but
still a tool as old as time. And then, to pull yet
another seamless trick, the resulting person-
alized biometric chart – a delicate water-
colour timeline – appeared seemingly out
of nowhere, thanks to an impossibly silent
printer. ‘We worked for two days on getting
that printer to stay quiet,’ laughs Ivy Ross,
Google’s vice president of Hardware Design.

Regardless of their size, these three elements
were crucial in creating the overall experience
that would result in an accurate reading: it
was important for visitors to feel at extreme
ease with tech, particularly within residential
spaces. It is a position that the tech giant
espoused during its first Milan outing,
Softwear, but literally brought home with its
second one. – RM
