Questions 19 to 20 refer to the passage below. For each question, select one answer
choice, unless the instructions state otherwise.
Some regional identities always have been partly the result of isolation.
But I tend to think that other regional cultures flourish in their
interaction with people of different minds around the world. We can
see New England’s regional identities developing not from its distance,
but from its engagement with other people. New Englanders were
much involved, through shipping and migration, with other cultures
around the world. But that didn’t make them less of New England.
They would travel around the world and establish their New England
societies wherever they went, and their identities would be deepened by
it. It is partly the growth of global communications that makes people
more conscious of their regional identities. It is not just a function
of insularity.
- In the context of the passage, “insularity” most nearly means
A superiority
B deflection
C confusion
D isolation
E communication - Select the sentence that provides evidence of New England’s “engagement
with other people.”
