Note
The object that is to become the opacity mask (the masking object) needs to be the
upper-most, selected object on the artboard. If it is a single object, like a rectangle, it
does not need to be a compound path. If the opacity mask is made from multiple
objects, they need to be grouped.



  1. Press the D key to set the default stroke (black, pt) and fill (white) for the new rectangle to
    more easily select and move it.




  2. Select the Selection tool ( ), and drag the rectangle to align it into the bottom center of the
    artboard.




  3. Press the Shift key, and click the Water.jpg image to select it as well.




  4. Choose Window > Transparency to open the Transparency panel. Click the Make Mask button,
