The year 2019 is a banner one for Brides, kicking off with a celebration of its
85th anniversary in this issue. Although Condé Nast printed its first Brides in summer
1959 (see the vintage fall cover above), the magazine actually began in 1934 as a
publication mailed free of charge to women whose wedding announcements appeared
in newspaper society pages. From the very beginning, this cornerstone brand was
the leading authority in the field, informing, encouraging, and guiding couples, from
proposal through the wedding, to the honeymoon and beyond.
That legacy continued as we launched Brides.com, and will keep building as we
grow our footprint every year, helping brides plan—both on our website and across
social media. This year Brides moves to a new home at Dotdash, a leading digital
company committed to helping people find answers, solve problems, and get inspired.
I’m so excited to continue our mission to bring you trusted advice and empower
creativity in everything involving this huge life moment. I hope you will join us online
as we expand our library of the most comprehensive and inclusive wedding content—
for all types of weddings.
So here is our own State of the Union address: We promise to uphold and celebrate
the joy that comes with love and marriage. To that end, we send a shout-out to Vow
(vowtoendchildmarriage.org), an organization devoted to creating a world in which
every girl can decide when, if, and whom to marry. Stay in touch with us @brides!
