Eagles remain undefeated after win at Scotland Yard

Brett Bremer
Sports Editor
The Caledonia varsity
girls’ soccer team fell to 1-
in OK Red Conference action
as it was shut out by two
conference foes this week.
Hudsonville scored two
early goals and held on for a
2-0 win at Scotland Yard in
Caledonia Thursday, two
days after the Scots were
bested 1-0 at Grandville.
The Eagles moved to
4-0-2 on the season with the
win. They have only given
up a single goal this season,
in a 1-1 tie with Unity
Christian to open the season.
Hudsonville has now out-
scored its five OK Red
Conference foes 13-0 so far
this season with the lone
blemish on its conference
record a scoreless draw with
the Grand Haven girls.
The last charge in on the
Eagle net was the best one of
the night for the Caledonia
girls Thursday. Grace Klein
rolled a pass across the top of
the Eagle box to teammate
Veronica Foster-Toledano

who tapped it beyond the
defense for a crashing Amber
Lewandowski, but her shot
from left to right skipped just
wide of the far post with
about two and a half minutes
to go.
Chances were few and far
between as the Eagles con-

trolled the possession against
the Scots. Caledonia did
have a free kick ricocheted
off he crossbar about 11 min-

utes into the second half.
Kennedy Elles shot past an
Eagle wall from just outside
the box bounded out towards
the top of the box and a sec-
ond chance was smothered
by the Eagle keeper.
While keeping possession
from the Eagles was a strug-
gle at times, the Fighting
Scots did a solid job of pre-
venting strong chances for
the most part as the game
progressed. Keeper Tara
Robinson made a nice diving
save in the second half.
Laney Peterson was strong in

the back of the Scots’ defen-
sive line.
The Caledonia girls are
scheduled to host Portage
Northern for a contest today
(April 24) and will return to

the OK Red Conference in
the week ahead with games
at home Tuesday against
East Kentwood and Jenison
Thursday.

CHS girls bested in pair of

tough OK Red tennis duals
The Caledonia varsity
girls’ tennis team was bested
in a pair of OK Red
Conference duals this week,
falling 9-0 to East Kentwood
Thursday after an 8-1 loss to
Grandville Wednesday.
The second doubles team
of Allyson Abraham and
Grace Geer picked up the
Scots’ lone point in the dual
with the Grandville girls,
scoring a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Alice Melonia and Jacklyn
Whitcomb.
Those were the only two
sets the Scots won in the dual
with the Bulldogs, but there
were a number of competi-
tive ones. The tightest defeat
of the day for the Scots came
at fourth doubles where the
Grandville duo of Kennedy

Dewey and Kayla Griffin
eked out a 6-4, 6-4 win over
the Scots’ Allison Weibel and
Lily Stauffer.
The top two doubles
matches in the Scots’ dual
with East Kentwood were
tough ones as well. The East
Kentwood team of Kimberly
Luu and Deenie Mercer nar-
rowly defeated the Scots’
Tanner Pizzuti and Josie
Zomer 7-6(4), 6-4. The
Falcon team of Angel
Nguyen and Jessica Nguyen
edged the Caledonia team of
Abraham and Geer 7-6(1),
7-5 at second doubles.
Emma Andrulis put up a
good fight against East
Kentwood’s Lisa Ha in the
first singles match, but Ha
pulled off a 6-4, 6-4 win.

The Scots were also a part
of the East Kentwood
Invitational last Saturday
where they placed eighth.
Grand Rapids Christian took
the day’s championship with
22 points, finishing seven
points ahead of the run-
ners-up from Grandville and
nine ahead of third-place
Grandville.
Andrulis was 1-2 for the
day there, getting a 6-4, 4-6,
(10-2) win over South
Christian’s top player, Olivia
Koeman.
Caledonia also got a win
from the first doubles team
of Pizzuti and Abby Duong,
Abraham and Geer at second
doubles, and one from the
fourth doubles team of
Weibel and Stauffer.

Caledonia Township approves tax

break for Southbelt manufacturer
Greg Chandler
Staff Writer
The Caledonia Township
board Wednesday unani-
mously approved a 10-year,
50 percent tax abatement for
a new manufacturing plant in
the Southbelt Industrial Park.
Council members
approved the tax break
request by Ascent Brands
Inc., which just broke ground
on a 49,000-square-foot
facility at 5111 Beltway
Drive SE.
Ascent Brands is a spe-
cialty health care distributor
that has been in business
since 1994. It is the parent
firm of two companies –
MarketLab and Clearform.
The company is investing
more than $4 million into

construction of the plant, of
which more than $3.8 million
was eligible for the tax incen-
tives.
“It’s a significant expan-
sion from the space that they
are in now,” company attor-
ney Jared Belka said. “This is
going to support their contin-
ued growth, both through
increased sales but also some
acquisitions.”
Clearform currently oper-
ates out of a 14,000-square-
foot facility at 5220 68th St.
SE, just north of the new
building.
“It’s been there about 15
years, and right now, due to
more acquisitions and our
continued growth, we’re
bumping out the walls, big
time,” Ascent Brands repre-

sentative Kerri Milarch said.
The new plant is expected
to be open in the spring of
2022, Milarch said.
Ascent Brands currently
employs about 40 workers
and plans to add at least 12
new jobs in the first two
years the plant is open,
Assistant Township Clerk
Stephanie Skidmore wrote in
an email.
“We’re excited about
being able to stay in the com-
munity,” Milarch said.
“Working within Kent
County and Caledonia has
been a great thing for both
MarketLab and Clearform.
There’s a lot of growth
opportunity for the business.”
