Sports Editor
The Thornapple Kellogg
varsity boys’ and girls’ track
and field teams each went
1-1 in their OK Gold
Conference tri hosted by
Forest Hills Eastern Tuesday.
The TK ladies moved their
conference record to 1-
with a 109-27 win over the
Grand Rapids Catholic
Central girls and an 84-
loss to the host Hawks.
The TK boys bested
Catholic Central 98.33-
38.66, but were edged 75-
by the Forest Hills Eastern
boys.
There were many compet-
itive events, but the FHE
boys really dominated the
distance races to take the
wins over the Trojans and
Cougars. Forest Hills
Eastern’s Kyle McKee, Ben
Clason and Aiden Sullivan
went 1-2-3 in the 800-meter
run and the 1600-meter run,
and Clason won the 3200
with Sullivan second and
teammate Caleb Peterson
third. Those four guys also
won the 3200-meter relay for

the Hawks in 8:58.18.
Trojan senior Cameron
Gavette had a great day in
the hurdles. He set a personal
record in winning the 110-
meter high hurdles in 17.
seconds and took the 300-
meter intermediate hurdles in
44.81 seconds.
TK inched closer at the
end of the meet with the team
of Brennan Lutz, Jaxon Sias,
Gabe LaJoye and Gavette
winning the 1600-meter
relay in 3 minutes 45.25 sec-
onds.
It wasn’t just distance run-
ners that did it for FHE. The
Hawks also ah the three fast-
est times in the boys’ 100-
meter dash, led by Nasier
Harris’ time of 11.89.
Catholic Central sopho-
more Joseph Mullett won the
boys’ 200-meter dash in
23.38 seconds, but TK had
the next two finishers with
senior Wyatt Helzer second
in 23.51 and Sias third in
24.44. Those were new per-
sonal record times for the
two TK guys.
LaJoye, a sophomore, won
the 400-meter dash for TK in

a personal record time of
56.73 seconds.
In the field, TK had senior
Austin VanElst win the high
jump at 5 feet 10 inches and
place second in the long
jump at 17-8. Helzer took the
long jump at 18-1.
The hurdles and relays
were some of the best events
for the TK ladies. Freshman
hurdler Kristen Offringa ran
her fastest 100-hurdle time
yet, 17.61, to win that event.
Junior Trysta Hilton took the
300-meter low hurdles in a
personal record time of
51.24.
Offringa also teamed with
Anna Benedict, Paige
Zellmer and Addison
Satterfield to win the 400-
meter relay in 57.96.
Offringa, Benedict, Zellmer
and Hilton won the 800-
meter relay in 1:59.46.
Zellmer added a win for
TK in the pole vault by clear-
ing 7-6, and had two team-
mates set new personal
records in the event. Junior
Leah Luyk was third at 6-
and freshman Sydeny

Robertson fourth at 6-0. FHE
senior Eva Korte took the
runner-up spot with a person-
al record leap of 7-0.
Freshman Addison
Washler won the sprints for
the Hawks, taking the 100-
meter dash in 13.22 and the
200 in 28.57. TK sophomore
Lindsey Velting was the run-
ner-up in the 100 and
Offringa placed second in the
200.
Catholic Central freshman
Emily Tomes won the 400-
meter run in 1:07.01 and the
1600 in 5:49.77, while add-
ing a runner-up finish in the
800 behind FHE’s Kate
Laidlaw.
FHE junior Sophie Parker
won the girls’ discus and shot
put, with TK sophomore
Alana Compton second in
both events. Compton upped
her PR in the discus to 94-
and put the shot 28-10.
The TK ladies went into
the meet fresh off a win at
the Wayland Invitational last
Friday where they finished
tied in the final standings of
the seven-team meet with

Jenison. Both teams closed
the day with 698 points.
“The support and team
work is just amazing on this
team,” TK head coach
Maggie Wilkinson said. “We
are so young and the upper-
classman are really showing
a lot of leadership and love
for one another.”
The TK ladies only won
two events. Zellmer took the
pole vault at 9-0 and the team
of Hilton, Velting, Benedict
and Smith won the 800-
meter relay in 1:56.11.
Lucy VanDemark,
Madison Nagel, Aubrey
Martin and Jessica Durkee
added a runner-up finish in
the 3200-meter relay for the
TK girls.
Senior Dalace Jousma was
the runner-up in the discus at
85-11.5 and placed third in
the shot put with a personal
record mark of 31-7. Hilton
and Kenady Smith were sec-
ond and third in the high
jump with Hilton clearing
4-6 and Smith 4-4. Benedict
led TK in the long jump with
a mark of 14-.5 that put her

in fourth place, a quarter of
an inch ahead of her team-
mate Kylie Smith who was
fifth.
The top individual finish
on the track for TK came in
the 100-meter dash where
Velting was second with a
personal record time of
13.84.
The TK boys were seventh
on the day. Helzer had the
team’s top individual finish
on the track with a sec-
ond-place time of 23.79 in
the 200. The TK team of
Gilberto Tejada III, Helzer,
VanElst and Sias won the
800-meter relay in 1:37.15.
TK senior Blake Monroe
won the discus with a per-
sonal record throw of 188-
.25 and placed fourth in the
shot put with a new PR of
36-9. VanElst won the high
jump clearing 5-10 with Sias
fourth in that event at 5-8.
Helzer added a runner-up
mark of 19-7 in the long
jump and Matthew Smith led
TK in the pole vault with a
personal record leap of 10-
that put him in fourth place.

Caledonia Township planning Independence Day celebration
Greg Chandler
Staff Writer
Caledonia Township is
planning an Independence
Day weekend celebration,
even in continued uncertain-
ty from the COVID-19 pan-
demic.
The township board
Wednesday voted unani-
mously to move ahead with

plans for a parade and fire-
works display Saturday, July

  1. The township historically
    holds its Independence Day
    celebration the Saturday of
or before the Fourth of July.
    The township had a simi-
    lar parade and fireworks last
    year, with a parade route
    through the village that
    encouraged social distanc-
    ing.
    The board also voted to
set a budget of $20,000 for
    the celebration, $5,000 more
    than had been recommended
    by Township Supervisor
    Bryan Harrison. The $20,
will come out of the commu-
    nity promotions line item in
    the township budget,
    Township Treasurer/
    Administrator Richard
    Robertson said.
    “I anticipate between
    $10-13 [thousand] of that
    coming in for fireworks, and
    the rest for bathroom rentals,
    other needed equipment,
    things like that,” Harrison

said.
The township spent about
$12,000 on fireworks last
year, Robertson said.
Harrison said he has
already been contacted by
the contractor who supplied
fireworks last year to express
interest in this year’s show.
“We’ve reserved the date.
We just haven’t given him a
budget on how much to
order,” Harrison said.
Trustee Greg Zoller made
the motion to bump up the
budget for the celebration to
$20,000, “just in case there’s
overages in costs of fire-
works and maybe adding in a
band or something at the
Community Green.”
The board also convened
a five-member committee to
organize the celebration.
Serving on the committee
will be Harrison, Zoller,
Trustee Richard Snoeyink,
Caledonia Village President
Jennifer Lindsey and village
administrative assistant Lisa

Segard.
“That has been the core
of the committee in the past,”
Harrison said.
