Bucketing Data into Percentiles
Separating data into buckets or bins provides insight into how each value compares to the
whole. Figure 16.13 shows a partial list of employees who process a product and the number
of defects per 1,000 products that were identified by the quality assurance department. We
want to bucket this data into four bins to identify top performers and those employees who
may need more training. Excel provides the QUARTILE function to calculate the demarca-
tion line between each quartile. A quartile is a bucket that holds 25% of the data.
