Box & whisker charts
A box & whisker chart (introduced as a chart type in Excel 2016) is often used to summarize
data visually. In the past, it was possible to create such charts using Excel, but it required
quite a bit of setup work. Now, it’s simple.

Figure 20.38 shows a box & whisker chart created for four groups of subjects. The data is in
a two-column table. In the chart, the vertical lines extending from the box represent the
numerical range of the data (minimum and maximum values). The “boxes” represent the
25th through the 75th percentile. The horizontal line inside the box is the median value (or
50th percentile), and the X is the average. This type of chart enables the viewer to make
quick comparisons among groups of data.
