URINE SCREENING
Urinalysis: Assessment of proteinuria, ketones, glucose, leukocytes, and
bacteria is important to screen for underlying renal disease, diabetes, and
infection.
Culture: Screening for asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) is essential (~8%
of pregnant women have ASB). Left untreated, 30% of ASB progresses to
pyelonephritis, which is associated with septic shock, pulmonary edema, and
adult respiratory distress syndrome.
