CLASSIFICATION OF INCONTINENCE
Most of the following types of incontinence result when bladder pressure rises in
isolation of increases in urethral pressure.
Genuine stress incontinence (most common incontinence in young women) is
the result of rises in bladder pressure due to intra-abdominal pressure increases
(e.g., coughing and sneezing). These rises in bladder pressure are not transmitted
to the proximal urethra because it is no longer a pelvic structure, owing to loss of
support from pelvic relaxation. This may be associated with urethral
hypermobility (see Q-tip test) or less commonly with intrinsic sphincteric
deficiency.
