17-OH progesterone is a precursor in the biosynthesis pathway of cortisol. It
is elevated in late-onset congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), with 21-
hydroxylase deficiency. It is converted peripherally into androgens.
Testosterone is produced by both the ovary and the adrenal glands. A mildly
elevated level is suggestive of polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). A
markedly elevated level is consistent with an ovarian tumor.
