Ramira Delgato
Ramira & her son Elian (14) are from Manzanillo,
Cuba. They immigrated to the US in 2018 with
Ramira’s younger brother, Mateo. The three of them live
in a small apartment complex, where Ramira does not
always feel safe. Mateo has discussed purchasing a gun,
but Ramira doesn’t know if she wants one in the home.
Ramira did not complete high school and doesn’t
speak English fluently, however, she can read and write
in Spanish. Elian is a native Spanish speaker. He is
learning English much faster than Ramira, so she
often relies on him to translate for her. They have a bus
stop near their apartment, which serves as the primary
mode of transportation.
Elian is learning to cook from his mom. Cooking
is something they enjoy doing together, and the time
Ramira uses to connect with her son. While preparing
meals, Elian often talks about his lessons at school, and
his friends. Lately, he hasn’t had as much to say and has
been skipping out on dinner prep to spend more time
socializing with some boys he recently befriended at
school.
Ramira knows he is at ‘that age’ when it is common
for boys to pull away from their mothers, so she tries to
be understanding and give him his space. She is
concerned about her son because when he comes
home he’s been going straight to bed, which is
unlike him.
