A: “Great talk! Thank you! Locking up extra medications and
throwing away leftover meds is a great idea I had not thought
of....and I have 3 teenagers.”

Lockbox

  • A handful of people specifically mentioned use of the lock-
box and how it changed the conversations and behaviors
    in their home surrounding medication
    knowledge, storage and use.

A: “Even though I have had both my children at CMH ER for
suicidal thoughts depression anxiety & PTSD & have the bro-
chure to suicide proff my home & have done so to the best of
my ability I think the loxbox is an essential tool that should be
given to families in need. I came straight home
after tonight’s presentation & immediately locked up all med-
ications. Instead of moving them around from where I have
kept them hidden.”

A: “Thank you for the toolkit and gun lock. It can help delay an
attempted suicide with either gun or pills. My big
take-away is that suicide is preventable and a child my only
contemplate it for a brief period of time before an
attempt. So locking up the meds/Guns is really worth it.”

Request for more topics

  • Specific requests for strategies and clues on issues like
vaping, screen time, eating disorders, depression, anxiety,
drug and alcohol use, peer pressure, social media, stress,
bullying, sleep, gender identity topics, and other screening
clues and signs of mental health concerns.

A: “I would like to know if you ever present for adolescents? I
teach middle school in Kansas City and would love for you to
visit to speak to the students about brain development, so-
cial media use, how and when to say something when you are
concerned about a peer and other topics.”

A: “I think it would be helpful to have more strategies
to reinforce to my kids less screen time. Not having
their phone in their room at night, etc. We have
these conversations yet they think I’m a crazy
mom. Also teaching them life balances, exercise,
if not in a sport, less screen time, balancing a
job, school work.”

Influence of suicide, ideation,
attempts

  • A mentionable number of respondents
indicated they found either before or
after the presentation, their child had
    mental health concerns or suicidal
    thoughts/ideation. Awareness of and
    participation in the program
    prompted some of the conversations
    that revealed the information.

A: “Not long after this presentation, our
son presented with suicidal ideation and
actually attempted suicide a couple of
days afterwards. Based on information
from this presentation, we were able
to take steps to ensure that our son is
safe and get him the immediate help he
needs.”

A: “Excellent presentation...both delivery
and content provided. We are most grateful
for being there as our #yr old son has
attempted suicide # times, last attempt was #
months ago, when we learned about it. Thank
you again.”
