CHS boys win three relays,
second to Rockford at invite
The Caledonia boys were
second to their OK Red
Conference rivals from
Rockford May 8 at the Cedar
Springs Red Hawk
Invitational.
The Caledonia girls placed
third, also seeing the Rams
take the championship ahead
of them.
In the boys’ meet,
Rockford finished the day
with 765 points, ahead of
Caledonia 742, Cedar
Springs 518, Greenville 505,
Petoskey 359, Wellspring
Prep 136 and Grand River
Prep 109.
The Caledonia boys were
great in the distance races.
Josh Oom won the 1600-
meter run for the Scots in 4
minutes 33.13 seconds, with
teammate Donavan Mattson
second and Jamin Thompson
third. Thompson took the
3200-meter run in a new per-
sonal record time of 9:54.52,
with Cooper Sorensen sec-
ond and Oom third for the
Scots.
The Caledonia boys won
three of the four relay races.
Ethan Berends, Brock
Townsend, Dharius Walker
and Mason Powers won the
400-meter relay in 45.06 sec-
onds. Drew Carey, Andrew
Adams, Brendon Standhardt
and Colin Pearson won the
1600-meter relay in 3:39.52.
The Scot team of Adams,
Benjamin DeGood, Micah
Nagel and Pearson won the
3200-meter relay in 8:58.69.
The Rockford girls won
their championship with 948
points, ahead of Cedar
Springs 738.5, Caledonia
727, Petoskey 709, Vicksburg
448, Greenville 386.5, Grand
River Prep 64 and Wellspring
Prep 54.
The Caledonia girls got a
win from sophomore Natalia
Quigley in the 3200-meter
run who won with a new per-
sonal record time of 12:26.
and from junior Morgan
Babb who won the discus
with a throw of 93 feet 5
inches.
Wayland climbs Gold golf standings on home course
Wayland shot well on its
home course, and the
Thornapple Kellogg varsity
boys’ golf team was edged
by Kenowa Hills and South
Christian to finish sixth at
the OK Gold Conference
jamboree at Orchard Hills
Monday.
TK had finished fourth at
the previous two conference
jamborees.
Grand Rapids Catholic
Central tightened its grip on
the conference lead by win-
ning Monday with a score of

ally, and the Cougars also

Harmon each scored a 40.
The league was back
together again for the confer-
ence jamboree hosted by
Ottawa Hills at Indian Trails
Golf Course in Grand
Rapids.
Catholic Central won with
a score of 138, ahead of
Forest Hills Eastern 14,
South Christian 155, Kenowa
Hills 161, Wayland 161,
Thornapple Kellogg 14 and
Cedar Springs 188.
TK was led by Christian
DeBruin’s 43 and a 43 from
Newland. Hummer and
Pitsch each shot a 44.
Will Preston was the day’s
leader with a 33. Emerine
shot a 34 and Omness a 35.

The Caledonia varsity
softball team closed out its
week with a 27-3 win over
the visiting West Ottawa
Panthers in OK Red
Conference play Thursday.
The Fighting Scots had 13
hits in their two innings
at-bat, with Mackenzie
Moore and Carliegh Tanner
each knocking three hits.
Moore had two doubles,
three RBI and scored four
runs. Tanner had four RBI
and four runs scored.
Grace Siekman was 2-for-
4 with a pair of doubles and
two RBI for the Scots, and
she also got the pitching vic-
tory.
The Scots are hosting their
own invitational today (May
15) and will be back at it in
the OK Red Tuesday when
they host Grandville for a
doubleheader.
TK opens Gold tourney

varsity girls’ soccer team will
host Kenowa Hills in the
opening round of the OK
Gold Conference Tournament
Monday inside Bob White
Stadium in Middleville.
The Trojans took an 8-
win over the Knights when
they faced off during the con-
ference regular season last
month.
The TK ladies tested them-
selves outside the OK Gold
this week, falling 1-0 to visit-
ing East Grand Rapids
Wednesday after a 3-3 draw
at Zeeland East Monday eve-
ning.
The TK ladies head into
the conference tournament
with an 8-3-2 overall record.

help TK win at Cedar Springs

The Thornapple Kellogg
varsity girls’ tennis team
closed out a winning season
of OK Gold Conference
duals by bumping their con-
ference record to 4-3 with a
7-1 win over Cedar Springs
Tuesday in Cedar Springs.
TK swept the doubles
flights with its top two dou-
bles teams scoring three-set
wins over the Red Hawks.
TK’s Courtney Haveman and
Katie Schorr scored a 6-1,
4-6, 6-2 win over Hannah
Cox and Carley Dreyer at
number one.
At second doubles, TK’s
Tylor Buxton and Jamie
Devries pulled out an extend-
ed tiebreaker in the second
set to stay alive and then fin-
ished off a 2-6, 7-6(4), 6-
win over Laura Serek and
Sally Odren.
TK had no trouble in the
other two doubles matches.
Ellie Essenberg and Heide
Church at third doubles won
6-1, 6-0 and the TK team of
Madeline Coe and Trinity
Simmons won 6-0, 6-0 at
number four.
Charlotte Nelson scored a
7-6(4) win in a tiebreaker in
the opening set of her second
singles match with Cedar
Springs’ Ella Moore and then
surged toa 6-1 win in the sec-
ond set. TK also had Sophia
Beckering take a 6-2, 6-1 win
at number three and Christel
Hoskins take a 6-0, 6-1 win
at number four.
Cedar Springs got its lone
point from first singles play-
er Olivia Miller who won a
tough 6-4, 6-3 match with the
Trojans’ Nancy Hoogwerf.
Trojans pushed two match-
es to three sets in the dual
with the Forest Hills Eastern
girls last Wednesday. Hoskins
took the opening set of her
fourth singles match with
Rishika Kokkula, but
Kokkula rallied for 6-4, 6-
wins in the final two sets.
Haveman and Schorr won
the first set of their first dou-
bles match with the Hawks’
Palak Rekhani and Bella
Chiodini as well, but then the
FHE girls surged for 6-0, 6-
wins in the final two sets.
South Christian will host
the OK Gold Conference
Tournament Saturday (May
15).
