good hour, and decided that I’d had enough. I didn’t want to work for that
woman anymore. I was ready for something new, something different.
Maybe something that paid me enough to cover my electricity bill (I had
been living with candles lit at night for quite some time). But what could I
do to change my situation, really? It was the off-season. Few people came
through town during those months of the year because it rained every
afternoon. I had no ticket out of the country, no money, nothing of
significant material value. But not once did I doubt that I would receive an
opportunity to create something different—I trusted in life’s ability to care
for me. Always! So I looked up at the sky from my meditation spot and
said out loud: “Universe. I’m ready for something new. Bring it!”
at evening I went to work at the restaurant as usual. e owner
came by my house to apologize (or actually to tell me they were
understaffed and needed me to work, but I took it as an apology). I had no
other way of making money at that moment, so I headed over. Halfway
through my shift a big group of people came in to eat, eight or ten of
them, and we immediately hit it off. I waited on their table and at one
point overheard them talking about sustainable development and some
kind of reforestation project. is was a subject that interested me greatly,
so I joined the conversation, and at the end of the meal they asked me to
sit down with them. I didn’t care too much about keeping up appearances
in front of the owner anymore, and since the restaurant was nearly empty,
I sat down. Someone poured me a glass of wine, and we got to talking. It
turned out they were all from a company that owned a lot of land in the
mountains surrounding the area we were in, and they were in the process
of building a luxury eco-resort, hoping to raise money to help the
impoverished parts of the country. is all sounded extremely exciting to
me—wealthy people on a mission, looking to improve the world. We
spent a good hour talking, and after a little while the CEO asked me, “So,
what about you? Are you happy here?” I thought about it and immediately
answered, “No. I used to be happy here, but I decided just this morning
I’m ready for something new.”
