Creative thinking : Choose a water collection and storage method

Method : Participatory group brainstorm

Tools : Black/white board, large paper, markers

References : PC Book MOD 12 - Appropriate Technology

Objective : Participants choose the most appropriate water collection and
storage techniques for their community

Step 1

The facilitator can outline the different types of water collection and water storage
techniques and write them on the board - See the previous exercise for examples if
needed.

Discuss with the participants the different factors that will affect the choices
they make. Create a list of these factors on the board so that everyone can
comment and give input.

For example:

  • How much water is needed?

  • What is the water source?

  • Is the water source constant all year?

  • What will the water be used for?

  • Are different types of collection and storage needed to serve different needs?

Step 2

  • Ask the participants to divide into smaller workgroups.

  • Each group can choose the types of water collection and water storage
    technique they think are best.

  • Ask them to answer the following questions within their groups:

    • Why have they made their choice?

    • How will the water be distributed in the community?

    • How will it be maintained and who will maintain it?

Step 3

When the groups have finished they can present their results to the whole group for
comments and feedback.
