Contraindications, Interactions, and Side Effects (Fo-Ti) — Class 2d. Raw root is laxative;
prepared root may cause GI distress; contraindicated with diarrhea (AHP). May cause colic,
diarrhea, nausea, numbness of the extremities, and skin rashes (AHP; SKY). Allergic cystosis may
result (LAF). Emodin has vasodilator and immunosuppressive effects in test tubes. LD50 of
alcoholic percolates 169 to 2700 mg/kg (raw to cured) (LAF).
