O Tempo e a Restinga - Time and Restinga

was to develop such programs combining company’s professional knowledge with existing
region knowledge, then we would have the chance to reduce costs and fulfill the recovery
mission of Restingas’ areas.
Thus, we chose to implement the recovery projects directly, not hiring a specific
company to planting. However, crossing over this step was not easy. First, it was necessary
to convince the companies’ directors and managers involved that we could do the job,
since the direct execution of projects is not part of the big companies’ culture in Brazil. The
staff discussed the question several times, and decided to make this commitment and
start the recovery program by building a large Restinga nursery.
The reforestation program being implemented in Caruara is amazing! This is
based on ecological concepts that strengthen the own Restinga’s species, which are
adapted to extremely restrictive conditions of sandy soil and low fertility. The selection of
Restinga’s plants is related to geological concepts, not humans. Honoring these concepts,
we were sure that we would succeed in our challenges. This conviction was based on
our knowledge of biology and species selection, concerning the periods of highest rate of
rainfall and the appropriate planting techniques. I believe that the Caruara’s reforestation is
the kickoff for a natural regeneration that is ordered again by own soils and climatic region
conditions, providing ideal environment for the local fauna maintenance.
The greatest happiness I felt during the time I worked in the reserve implementation
process was the plant nursery construction. It was a great frontier for the reforestation of
degraded NPPR areas and the key to the realization of the project. With this construction,
we convinced the entire board of directors that we would be able to perform the recovery
and create an environmental framework within enterprises. From there on, we became
managers of all company forest demands, and the environment area had a distinction in
the huge work of the Açu Port.
I have a dream for Caruara. I wish it was a reference to the coastal formations where
public and private actors would contribute to its improvement. I believe it, because it will develop
as a conservation unit as the Açu Port project progresses. Success! This is the future.
