I
f flying into Busuanga, one takes a
left for a scenic drive through
cattle country past plains and down
winding hills and jungle to Coron.
This town has become the wreck
diving capital of the Philippines.
The town has a newly remodeled,
eco-oriented waterfront, a wide
selection of hotels, dive centers and
various tours. Look for locally
designed T-shirts and traditional
handicrafts at Corong Galeri Lokals.
Coron Bay is a
large sheltered
body of water that
was a perfect
sheltered
anchorage for
Japan’s ships
during WWII. The
drawback of this
sheltered area is
that there isn’t
much water
movement so
visibility can
vary greatly,
but most sites
are accessible
year ‘round.
There are a
number of dive
centers to
choose from.
Tech diving is
popular with
many courses
offered. The relative lack of currents
on most wrecks and the depths of
some of the wrecks means they are
perfect for training and the practice
of technical diving. All of the ships
have mooring buoys and lines going
down to the wrecks.
There are also new sanctuaries
here with great soft corals, hard
corals, macro life and fish life.
