Confusing? You bet.
You see, according to the FDA, food products can be labeled as being
transfats free even when they contain as much as ½ gram of trans fats per
serving. That’s ridiculous. One cookie may not contain any trans fats, according
to the FDA, but eat 2 cookies and you just consumed 1 gram of trans fats, which
can mess up your hormones and clog your arteries. Do the math, because who
eats just 2 cookies?
The American Heart Association recommends on its website to limit trans fats
to 1 percent of your total calories, but research indicates that there is no safe
limit. On the Perfect 10 Diet, the number is “zero.” If you’re going to include
any processed food in your diet, read the list of ingredients on the box for the
presence of any partially hydrogenated oils, instead of just looking for trans fats
information on the label.
