common now that we are being given this kind of dietary misinformation.
Casting fat as the enemy, despite the best intentions, has created a host of health
problems. This simply means you need to put natural fat back in your diet, not
eliminate it.
If you think I’m in the anti-carbohydrate camp, I assure you that I’m not. If,
like me, you love bread, brown rice, and other carbs, the lowcarb mania that
swept the nation probably left you wondering if the real problem is in sugar.
Lowcarb diets advise you to stay away from oranges, grapes, and pasta. Not me.
I love this food, and I am not about to give it up. And you shouldn’t either. The
truth is that lowcarb diets are also unbalanced, and they are just troubling for
your hormones and health. Lowcarb diets do lead initially to weight loss because
they balance insulin levels, but they send other critical hormones into disarray.
In addition, many lowcarb diets are way too high in protein. Protein is a very
necessary nutrient, but only in the right amounts. Eating too much protein can
lead to kidney stones, gout, and osteoporosis. And let’s get a reality check here:
do you really think eating processed meat and little to no carbs on a daily basis is
a healthy thing to do?
First, let’s understand the connection between carbohydrates and good health.
Fiber is the miracle nutrient that helps fight disease. Health experts recommend
eating 25 to 30 grams of fiber a day. Some believe that 50 grams of fiber a day is
a better target. When you load up on protein and fat, fiber gets shut out of your
diet. On top of that, Americans eat comparatively few vegetables and fruits. We
need to increase fiber in our diet, not eliminate it. And the best sources for fiber
are vegetables, fruits, and whole grains—all of which are carbohydrates. Again,
it’s all about balance, and that’s the focus of the Perfect 10 Diet.
Low-fat and lowcarb diets are downright dangerous for your hormones and
overall health, so I developed my own plan. Somebody’s got to do it. Sure there
have been many diets on the market that addressed obesity by targeting one
specific hormone at a time, such as insulin, thyroid, or cortisol. But is obesity
related to an imbalance of one hormone? I don’t think so. Your body has
hundreds of hormones. Targeting one hormone alone and ignoring others makes
these diets fall short on delivering real or sustainable results.
